Gabardine is a specialized twill weave with a steep diagonal angle (approximately 63°, compared to 45° for standard twill). The steeper angle creates a tighter, smoother fabric surface with three advantages for structured uniforms:
- Cleaner appearance — the fine, steep diagonal creates a more formal surface than standard twill
- Better crease retention — the tighter construction holds a pressed edge longer
- Higher abrasion resistance — less yarn movement means longer wear at elbows and collar
Gabardine is the standard weave for blazers, suit jackets, management uniforms, and any garment where the fabric must stand away from the body in a tailored silhouette.
