Description

Part 1: Medical Scrub Sets (Daily Clinical Wear)

Scrub sets are general clinical workwear — worn for daily patient care, rounds, and non-sterile procedures. Standard scrubs are not liquid barrier products and are not rated under AAMI PB70 unless specifically constructed and tested with a fluid-resistant finish. If your team needs liquid barrier protection, see Part 2 below for isolation and surgical gowns.

Part 2: Surgical & Isolation Gowns (Liquid Barrier Rated)

Surgical and isolation gowns are classified under ANSI/AAMI PB70, the standard governing liquid barrier performance for protective apparel in healthcare facilities. Unlike scrubs, these garments carry a tested and labeled barrier level that determines what procedures they’re appropriate for.

The Four AAMI PB70 Levels — What They Actually Mean

Level Protection Typical Use
Level 1 Minimal — basic water-spray resistance Basic care, standard patient handling, visitor gowns
Level 2 Low — resists water spray and light pressure penetration Minor procedures with limited fluid exposure
Level 3 Moderate — resists heavier fluid exposure and moderate pressure Procedures with moderate blood/fluid exposure risk
Level 4 Highest — the only level tested for viral penetration resistance Long, fluid-intensive surgical procedures; high infection-exposure risk

Important distinction: Levels 1–3 are tested using water as the challenge liquid and indicate relative resistance — they are not certified as impermeable. Only Level 4 gowns are tested against actual viral penetration resistance and can be considered a true barrier against bloodborne pathogens. Match the level to your actual procedural risk, not just to “higher is always better” — a Level 4 gown costs more and is typically less breathable than a Level 2, which is wasted expense and reduced comfort if your procedures don’t require that level of protection.

Reusable vs Disposable — A Detail Procurement Often Misses

If you’re purchasing reusable surgical or isolation gowns, the AAMI barrier rating is only valid for the tested number of wash cycles. A reusable gown washed beyond its rated cycle count no longer meets its original barrier level — and there is no visual way to tell that a gown has crossed that threshold. This makes a documented wash-cycle tracking program a real requirement, not a nice-to-have, for any facility using reusable barrier gowns. Ask us for the rated cycle count for your specific gown order, and build cycle tracking into your laundering protocol from day one.

Gown Fabric & Construction

Spec Detail
Barrier Level Level 1, 2, or 3 available (specify per application)
Base Fabric Polyester or polyester-cotton blend with fluid-resistant treatment
Critical Zone Reinforcement Reinforced front and sleeve panels available for higher-exposure applications
Closure Rear-tie or wraparound, per your facility’s protocol
Rated Wash Cycles (reusable) 75

Note: We do not currently offer Level 4 gowns; for procedures requiring viral penetration-resistant barrier protection, consult a supplier with Level 4 certification specific to that use case.

  • Facility-specific color-coding (many hospitals assign scrub colors by department or role)
  • Custom sizing programs for multi-facility standardization

Quality Verification

Before committing to a bulk order, we provide:

  • Pre-production samples for approval
  • Colorfastness and shrinkage test certificates for scrub fabric (ISO 105-C06, ISO 6330)
  • AAMI PB70 test documentation for gown barrier level, including rated cycle count for reusable gowns
  • Batch-specific test reports matching your shipment’s roll numbers

FAQ

Are your scrubs rated for liquid barrier protection? Standard scrubs are daily clinical wear and are not AAMI PB70 rated. If your role requires fluid barrier protection, you need a surgical or isolation gown — see Part 2 above, or ask us about scrub-gown combination programs for roles with intermittent exposure risk.

What AAMI level do we actually need? It depends on your procedure’s fluid exposure risk, not on ordering the highest available level by default. Level 1–2 covers most standard patient care and low-exposure procedures. Level 3–4 is for higher-exposure surgical settings. If you’re unsure, tell us your procedure type and typical exposure conditions and we can help you match the correct level rather than over- or under-specifying.

How do we know when a reusable gown has exceeded its rated wash cycles? There’s no visual indicator — this is exactly why a documented tracking system matters. We provide the rated cycle count with every reusable gown order; we recommend tagging or logging each gown’s wash count against that number.

Can scrubs be antimicrobial-treated? Yes, silver-ion or equivalent antimicrobial finishes are available as an option on our performance knit scrub fabric.

What’s the minimum order quantity? 50 units per style and color, for either scrubs or gowns. Mixed sizes within that quantity are accepted.

What documentation do you provide with bulk orders? For scrubs: fiber composition, colorfastness, and shrinkage test reports. For gowns: AAMI PB70 barrier level test documentation and rated cycle count (reusable gowns), all batch-specific and matched to shipment roll numbers.
