HV-FR-300 — Hi-Vis FR Fluorescent Twill 300gsm with Anti-Static

HV-FR-300 is a fluorescent high-visibility fabric treated with THPC (Proban) flame retardant finish — combining three critical safety functions in a single textile: high-visibility fluorescence, flame resistance, and anti-static protection.

This is not a standard FR fabric with fluorescent dye added. The fluorescent pigments are formulated to meet EN ISO 20471’s strict chromaticity and luminance requirements while surviving the chemical and thermal stress of the FR finishing process. The fluorescent effect must remain visible after 20+ industrial washes — a specification that eliminates most standard fluorescent fabrics from FR applications.

Why Three Functions in One Fabric?

Workers in road maintenance, emergency rescue, gas utility, and railway environments face multiple hazards simultaneously:

Hazard Protection Required HV-FR-300 Solution
Moving vehicles / traffic High visibility — fluorescent color + reflective tape EN ISO 20471 Class 2 certified fluorescence
Flame / flash fire Flame retardant clothing EN ISO 11612 certified FR treatment
Explosive atmosphere (gas leak) Anti-static — no spark generation EN 1149 certified — 1% conductive fiber standard
Molten metal (cutting/grinding) Welding protection EN ISO 11611 Class 1 certified

A worker responding to a gas leak on a roadside needs all three protections simultaneously. HV-FR-300 delivers them in a single fabric specification.

Fluorescent vs. Standard Colors — The Difference

Standard FR fabrics in Orange or Yellow are safety-colored but not fluorescent. Under low-light conditions (dusk, dawn, overcast, tunnel), they blend into the background. Fluorescent fabrics convert invisible UV light into visible light — appearing to “glow” in conditions where standard colors disappear.

Condition Standard Orange FR Fluorescent Orange FR (HV-FR-300)
Daylight Visible Visible — similar
Dusk/dawn Poor — blends Highly visible — fluoresces
Overcast/rain Poor Good — UV penetrates clouds
Tunnel/shade Poor Moderate improvement
Night (with reflective tape) Tape only visible Tape + fluorescent background visible in headlights

Anti-Static — Why It Is Standard (Not Optional)

HV-FR-300 includes 1% conductive carbon fiber as standard equipment, not an optional add-on. The reasoning:

  • The most common applications for hi-vis FR (gas utility, emergency rescue, fuel tanker loading) involve explosive atmospheres
  • A static discharge from non-anti-static clothing in a gas-leak environment can be fatal
  • Adding conductive fiber at the spinning stage costs approximately 3–5% more and adds zero maintenance burden
  • There is no reason to offer hi-vis FR without anti-static

If EN 1149 certification is not required (e.g., roadside construction without explosion risk), contact us for a non-AS variant. We do not stock it by default.

Inherent FR (IFR) Variant

For programs requiring unlimited wash durability, zero formaldehyde, or chemical splash resistance, HV-FR-300 is also available in an inherent modacrylic/cotton blend:

  • HV-IFR-300: 60% Modacrylic / 38% Cotton / 2% Conductive Fiber
  • Same weight (300gsm), same Hi-Vis Class 2 certification
  • Permanent FR — unlimited washes
  • Zero formaldehyde
  • EN 13034 limited chemical splash
  • Higher cost (+40–50%) — use for chemical, pharmaceutical, long-life programs

Applications

Application Why HV-FR-300
Road maintenance & construction crews EN ISO 20471 Class 2 hi-vis + FR for asphalt work near traffic

Emergency rescue services (fire, ambulance) FR for fire scenes + hi-vis for roadside incident management
Railway maintenance & track work Hi-vis for rail corridor + FR for welding/cutting near tracks
Oil & gas pipeline emergency crews Explosive atmosphere + traffic zone — all three protections needed
Airport ground crew (fuel handling) Hi-vis for apron operations + FR + anti-static for fuel areas
Electrical utility — roadside repair Substation and pole work near traffic — arc flash + hi-vis
Towing and roadside assistance Hi-vis for traffic + FR for cutting/grinding during vehicle extrication

Care Instructions

Step Instruction
Washing Machine wash 60°C, normal cycle
Bleaching Do not bleach — chlorine degrades both FR treatment and fluorescent dye
Drying Tumble dry medium — avoid prolonged high heat (fluorescent dye sensitive)
Ironing Medium iron (150°C) — do not iron directly over reflective tape
Reflective tape Wash with tape attached — avoid fabric softener (reduces tape reflectivity)

⚠️ Fluorescent-specific care: Fluorescent dyes are inherently less wash-fast than standard dyes. EN ISO 20471 requires the fabric to maintain minimum chromaticity and luminance for 20 washes. After 20 washes, the fluorescent effect gradually fades but the FR and anti-static protections remain fully functional. For extended fluorescent life, wash at 40°C (not 60°C) and hang dry in shade. The FR treatment is not affected by lower wash temperature.

FAQ

Q: What is the difference between EN ISO 20471 Class 2 and Class 3? A: Class 3 requires more fluorescent and reflective material than Class 2 — typically a full-sleeve garment (coverall or jacket with full-length sleeves). HV-FR-300 fabric meets Class 2 background material requirements at 300gsm. Class 3 can be achieved by using this fabric in a full-coverage garment design with additional reflective tape area. The fabric itself is the same.

Q: How long does the fluorescent color last? A: EN ISO 20471 certifies the fabric to maintain minimum chromaticity for 20 industrial washes. In practice, the fluorescent effect is visually acceptable for 30–40 washes before noticeable fading occurs. The FR and anti-static properties are unaffected by dye fading. The garment remains fully protective — it just becomes less bright.

Q: Can I wash this fabric with reflective tape already attached? A: Yes. The tape should be applied by the garment manufacturer before delivery. Wash with tape attached. Do not use fabric softener — it coats the reflective beads and reduces reflectivity. Do not iron directly over the tape.

Q: Which color is more visible — Orange or Yellow? A: Orange is more visible in natural environments (greens, browns, greys) — it offers higher contrast. Yellow is more visible in urban environments (concrete, asphalt). Orange accounts for approximately 70% of global hi-vis FR fabric orders. Yellow is standard for railway and some European markets.

Q: Is anti-static really necessary for roadside construction? A: For general roadside construction without explosion risk, anti-static is not strictly required. However, since the same crew may respond to gas leaks or work near fuel storage, many safety programs specify FR + anti-static + hi-vis as a single standard for all field workers. HV-FR-300 has anti-static built in as standard — it cannot be ordered without it.

Q: Do you supply reflective tape as well? A: No — we supply the fluorescent FR fabric only. Reflective tape is applied by the garment manufacturer. We can recommend compatible tape specifications and suppliers upon request.
